Typographic Poem Interpretation

In are critique for are personal identity design some of are peers were using international characters to show the influence that their heritage has in their work, which in my opinion it is a really creative approach to the solution because they are not only sharing a personal interests and respect for their background but they are also showing how they can work in different markets as designer. Since that critique I have been looking at a lot of international designs made by people form countries like China, Japan, Russia and the Golf. Nod Young is a designer from Beijing, China who made these designed called The Puti Tree an interpretation of a original Zen classic, The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch. In this piece we observe a simple typographical layout that plays with geometrical like Chinese calligraphic full of vivid colors to express the mood.

The design and the layout is really clean it shows great use of negative space and how you could mix computer design with handmade artwork . These seven calligraphic paintings are part of a brochure design made by Khawar Bilal in his work description he mentions that these were his first attempt to produce these kind of calligraphy, in which he combines with nice quotes to complements the design. Calligraphy

While looking for inspiration for are personal identity logo design I ran into these calligraphic designs that caught my eye. Calligraphy comes form the Greek word kallos "beauty" and graphẽ "writing", it is often called the art of writing. Calligraphy is the art of giving forms to signs in a stylish way. Calligraphy is an old art which as influence a wide variety of cultures from the Japanese to the Arabic and to the Western. It even has evolve threw the years dividing it into two type of calligraphy the Classical and the Modern. Modern calligraphy ranges from functional hand lettered inscriptions and designs to fine art, while Classical calligraphy differs from typography and non-classical hand-lettering improvised at the moment of writing. I did know that calligraphy was still so popular to design until I did my mini research and learned about it. Hope you enjoy these examples as much as I did...

Typographical Art

Etymologically Typography means (from the Greek words τύπος typos = "That by which something is symbolized or figured (die) and grapho = "I write"). As its etiological meaning said type has been traditionally created to be use as a readable and writable source. But lately we have see that artist and designer have been using type and manipulating it as strokes. They have introduce new way of using lines of type as if they where regular strokes made by any media and as you see above they are able to create beautiful shapes like animal portraits, famous Hollywood faces or even self-portraits. It is amazing how you can create shapes with other sources like type and how you can capture them with your visual perception. Now I do agree with the saying that "Art is art if the artist tells you it's art".

HOW magazine

Yesterday I was reading HOW magazine and started to remember all the creative covers they have design over the years, and how they have come up with new variations of design without distorting the font uses in the name in every issue. We have see the HOW title in a building, a tattoo, found typography, and even type created by objects. This is really an example of when we use the cliche phrase: " Thinking outside the box "

Hollywood Type

Recently I received an email from a friend that loves typography, and she send me these images they are illustrations of old Hollywood artist that have been made with different types of fonts. The illustrations were publish in a Brazilian new paper. If you look at it none of the type as been distorted, I'm mentioning these because they are many artist that distort the type so they can show what they want to communicate, in this case is just been placed correctly so the shape of the letters assimilate the shape of the body. Cool right!!

Type in buildings

While walking on South Beach threw Ocean Drive these two Hotel came to my attention because of the bold signs they have. Guessing by the structure, the color, and the decorative motives in the front of the Hotel I believe they belong to a 40's - 50's era. After these I realize and learned that every font used in each sign not only came to play in the architectural design so it looks good and attractive to the public, but it also gives you a hint of the vibe lived in them.

A creative way of using Bembo Type

While I was surfing the web for fonts usable for a design I came across an interesting website that uses the Bembo font in a creative an fun way. Before I reveal the site let me tell you a little bit of the Bembo typeface. Bembo type originates in Venice by the year 1929, is a copy of the Aldine Roman typeface. Late in the 15th century, Aldus published a relatively insignificant 60-page essay by the Italian scholar Pietro Bembo, from which it got its name. The type used for the text was a new design commissioned by Aldus and cut by Francesco Griffo.

Griffo’s design was lighter and more harmonious in weight than earlier romans. Text set in it was also more inviting and easier to read than previous designs of the era. The publication became very popular in Italy an soon spread to France where it
came to the attention of Claude Garamond, a famous French type founder, and through his efforts to copy the typeface eventually spread its influence to Germany, Holland and the rest of Europe
. Characteristics of the Bembo type are:
  1. minimal variation in thick and thin stroke weight
  2. small x-height
  3. ascender height exceeding cap height
  4. oblique stress
  5. short, bracketed serifs with cupped bases
  6. angled serifs on lower case ascenders

Go on and check in out it is really interesting!!!!!

Who said type can't be use as a POP

Ever since we started this class is been inevitable to see type from another perspective. For example last week when I was researching for magazine grids for another class, I came upon this image which is a POP display of the Rolling Stone magazine.
These image shows us how designer are incorporating and using type creatively in their design. These specific display was use in a Rolling Stone travel exhibition called the 30th Anniversary Covers Tour, where the most popular covers where shown with objects donated by the artist appearing in the covers. In this case inside the lowercase g you will find one of Madonnas concert customs autograph from the 80's.
